Our Ales Of Outstanding Natural Beauty are brewed right here beneath the chimney at Holmes Mill – just behind our famous Beer Hall – where a dedicated team of artisan brewers craft a collection of cask beers inspired by the outstandingly beautiful landscape of Bowland.
Bowland Brewery started life as a microbrewery on the edge of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making a selection of beers named after the scenery and wildlife of this picturesque corner of Lancashire.
Beers like Hen Harrier, Boxer Blonde and Pheasant Plucker have quickly established themselves among local ale aficionados – earning the brewery a string of awards.
Arkell's Brewery is one of the finest examples of a Victorian steam brewery anywhere in the world. But if this magnificent site looks like a museum, the visitor has to remind themselves that it is still a fully-functioning brewery. Driving power in the building is supplied through a system that was first used here in 1910, though the belts are now powered by electricity rather than steam.
John Arkell was a remarkable man. Born into a farming family in 1802 in Kempsford, South Gloucestershire, he emigrated to the New World in his late twenties and took with him a group of local people who sought a refuge from the tough conditions endured by agricultural folk at that time. It was a brave step.

Adnams Brewery has a long and rich heritage. Beer has been brewed on the same site as the present brewery for at least 670 years. We are proud of our history and Adnams today looks towards the future and continues to innovate and evolve. Whilst there are gaps along the way, we’ve picked out a few of our highlights over the years.
By car from the west, take the A14 east to join the A1120 at Stowmarket. Take the A1120 to Yoxford, then join the A12 heading north. Take the A1095 turn off for Southwold. Alternatively, take the A12 from East London, past Chelmsford, Colchester and Ipswich and follow directions above. For the sailors amongst you, tack into Southwold Harbour and walk across the common.
